Dr. Davis's Exam Style

Dr. Davis is NEVER condescending and is arguably the most approachable professor in the CHEM department at UMD.
Dr. Davis’s exam questions are long, but conceptually straightforward and molecules are simple and non-complicated. However, his exam wording can make a reaction or 3-D conformer "look" more confusing.
Dr. Davis provides his students with enough exams (unlike ~50% of UMD professors) - 3 semesters worth WITH ANSWER KEYS including finals - to prepare you for midterms and the final.
While most CHEM 241 professors just talk all the way through lecture and continually introduce new reactions, Dr. Davis will take 5 minute breaks so students can “mentally breathe.”

  • Study Tips for CHEM 241 Exams

    Don’t Cram

Plan ahead at least 2 weeks. Study by chapter so you absorb in digestible chunks.

    Avoid Distractions

Silence your phone, videos, and tell family to stop bugging you to create a focused environment.

    Ask Questions

Be bold and ask direct questions when you're stuck - there's value in wrong answers so you can recognize and avoid them.

Why Tutor with Me for Dr. Davis's CHEM 241?

    • Learn to Sound Smart with Your Professor - Learn how to shine among your peers by visiting office hours often with "smart" questions ready in hand - I'll teach you how and what questions to ask and get the most out of 1-on-1 face time during professor office hours.

Homework Guidance - A tutor needs a 1 hour session to walk a student through one of Dr. Davis’s homeworks and help them arrive at the correct answer on their own. Students need 4 hours on their own without a tutors’ guidance to achieve the same correct answer.

Timing - If you can’t make it to Dr. Davis’s 8AM class, you’ll be perpetually behind in CHEM 241, no matter how nice or how good Dr. Davis is at teaching. He will know if you don't attend class because he recognizes the faces that come to lecture regularly in the hallway, and new faces that only show up during exams. However, as a tutor I will help you get ahead with Orgo 2 material so you're motivated to wake up early and attend class!

Study the Right Resources - From my experience, in order to succeed in Dr. Davis’s CHEM 241 class you need to study old exams outside of what’s provided by [[her/him/them]] along with what he gives you. Tutor 1-on-1 with me to access and understand, in great depth, old exams and resources.
